What Is a Reefer Container?

Industrial-Grade Temperature Control in a Steel Container

A refrigerated container, a "reefer" in industry terms, is a standard shipping container with a refrigeration unit integrated into one end wall. It runs continuously or on a set schedule, circulating conditioned air through a raised aluminum T-floor so air can move beneath the stored goods.

Reefers were designed for international perishable food shipping. They hold precise temperatures across ocean voyages, through equatorial heat and arctic cold. What that means for you: a reefer on your Alabama property will hold its set temperature through the hottest week of the year.

Reefers need a power source, typically a 460V 3-phase connection. If your property does not have 3-phase, a diesel or natural gas generator can run the unit instead. We can walk through power options when you inquire.

Reefer units are inspected and tested before delivery, and the refrigeration system is run and verified to reach set temperature. We share whatever service history we hold for the unit. Refrigerated units carry no separate refrigeration warranty.

Alabama Applications

Who Uses Reefer Containers in Alabama

Seafood houses, docks and charter operations at Bayou La Batre, Coden and Dauphin Island holding catch cold at the water rather than trucking it inland first.

Peanut, produce and pecan operations across the Wiregrass and the Tennessee Valley holding product between picking and packing.

Catfish processors and pond operations in Hale, Greene and Perry counties needing reliable cold on the farm.

Caterers, event operators and beach rental managers on the Baldwin County coast who need cold storage delivered to a site that has none.

Restaurants and grocers in Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile adding walk in capacity in the lot rather than rebuilding the back of house.

Power Requirements

Running a Reefer Container in Alabama

Standard Power Connection

Reefer containers plug into a 460V 3-phase, 60Hz supply, the standard for commercial and industrial electrical systems. If your property is commercial, agricultural, or industrial, there is a good chance you already have 3-phase available.

A qualified electrician can install an outlet at the reefer location. The refrigeration unit draws roughly 7 to 12 kW depending on the set temperature and the ambient conditions.

Generator Option

If the property has no 3-phase supply, a rural site, an off-grid location, or a temporary event site, a diesel or natural gas generator rated for 3-phase output can run the unit. Generator rentals are widely available through equipment rental companies.

We can walk through generator sizing and compatibility when you inquire about a specific unit.

Operating Through the Hot Season

When the ambient temperature climbs, the refrigeration unit works harder to hold its set point. Well-maintained reefers handle that reliably, because they were designed for global shipping routes including equatorial ones. Placing the reefer in shade or under a carport reduces compressor load and running costs through the hottest part of the year.

FAQ

Reefer Container Questions

460 volt three phase power. Confirm what service is available at the site before you order, or plan for a generator sized to the unit. This is the single question that decides whether a reefer works on a given site, so it is worth answering before anything else.
Refrigerated units are sold inspected and tested, with any service history we hold, and carry no separate refrigeration warranty.
Level ground with solid bearing under the four corner castings, about 100 feet of straight run for a 40ft unit, at least 14 feet of overhead clearance, and shade where you can get it. A reefer in Alabama summer heat works against ambient temperature and humidity, so shade and airflow around the condenser end are worth planning for.
Delivery runs typically 1 to 2 weeks for north Alabama, the Birmingham metro, east Alabama and the coast, and 2 to 3 weeks for west Alabama, the Black Belt, the River Region and the Wiregrass, which sit in the hollow middle of the depot triangle Reefer stock is thinner than dry container stock, so tell us the date you need it as early as you can and we will tell you honestly whether it is reachable.
